OcioHogar – ¿Qué hizo que se convirtiera en diseñador?

Alan Wisniewski – Realmente terminé  en el mundo del diseño industrial por accidente. Al principio quería ser arquitecto pero oí a un profesor hablar sobre el diseño industrial y tras una breve investigación cambié de idea y supe que esto era para mí.

OH – ¿Qué necesita un diseño para ser un éxito?

A.W. – Creo que para hacer un diseño exitoso necesita una combinación de cosas: 1) Tiempo y el pensamiento puesto en la idea, la investigación y probar es una necesidad. 2) La ejecución es crucial, una idea mal ejecutada es malo… el producto perfecto está diseñado para ser minimalista e intuir qué hace y entenderlo fácilmente y hecho con honestidad.

OH – De todos sus diseños. ¿Cuál es su favorito?

A.W. –  He hecho muchos desde que empecé con Umbra, pero de todos ellos mi favorito es un reloj suspendido que llame el Suspend Clock. Quería crear un reloj de campana con un look clásico con una pieza de tiempo suspendida en el aire en su interior. Hemos sido capaces de darle una ilusión óptica muy efectiva de que la pieza flota.

OH – ¿En qué se inspira? ¿Dónde encuentran la inspiración?

A.W. – La encuentro en todas partes. Siempre estoy pensando diseños.  Cuando paseo, hojeando una revista o navegando por los blogs, veo algo que despierta una idea y tomo una foto para más tarde. Siempre encuentro la mejor inspiración cuando no la busco y cuando la veo me emociono y me mi mente se vuelve loca.

OH –  ¿Cómo es un día normal de trabajo para usted? ¿Podría contarnos más sobre su proceso creativo?

A.W. –  Yo diría que no hay un día normal de trabajo para mí, cada día es diferente y único…lleno de problemas y obstáculos que superar. Suelo entrar a trabajar, tomo un café y después decido cual es la mayor prioridad, y toqueteo aquí y allá de cinco a diez productos al día en diferentes etapas… desde el boceto al modelado en CAD para hacer prototipos en la tienda. Pero me encanta cada minuto porque me mantiene ocupado y no me gusta aburrirme.

OH – En su opinión ¿cuál va a ser la pieza estrella de esta temporada?

A.W. – He visto un montón de muebles geniales en el mercado y Umbra no ha prestado mucha atención a esta categoría en los últimos años. Pero este año hemos hecho del mobiliario una prioridad y hay algunas piezas geniales de camino. Tenemos una pieza nueva llamada Leanera que es una gran pieza multifuncional que puede estar en la entrada, el dormitorio o el baño.

OH – ¿Cómo ve el futuro del diseño de muebles?

A.W. – Los muebles serán más multifuncionales, la gente tiene muchas necesidades diferentes sobre mobiliario y el “mueble tradicional” va a desaparecer.  Cuanto más pueda hacer un único mueble por ti, mejor. Según sea necesario habrá que animar a la gente a que reutilice los muebles en vez de tirarlos a la basura y comprar nuevos porque sus necesidades han cambiado

OH – Actualmente trabaja para Umbra como diseñador. ¿Con qué otra compañía le gustaría trabajar?

A.W. –  Me encanta trabajar para Umbra porque me da la capacidad de diseñar para muchas áreas dentro de la casa. Me encantaría tener la oportunidad de  diseñar algunas piezas más permanentes a mayor escala… es divertido hacer cosas pequeñas pero me encantaría la experiencia de diseñar un edificio o un espacio al aire libre, etc.

OH – ¿Podría explicarnos por qué separa sus diseños entre sofisticados o diversión?

A.W. – Supongo que eso soy yo. Tengo un lado serio pero también tengo sentido del humor y me divierto trabajando. Me gusta crear simples y limpias piezas modernas y atemporales, pero también creaciones divertidas diseñadas de corazón que hablan de las emociones de la gente y pueden hacerles sonreír. Me gusta pensar que puedo diseñar en ambas categorías y tener esa doble faceta.

OH – ¿Podría contarnos un poco más sobre lo que está trabajando ahora? ¿Cuál será su próximo producto?

A.W. – Ahora estoy trabajando en un montón de cosas chulas. Estoy intentando crear más piezas que yo quiero en mi propia casa, cosas que no puedo encontrar o que quiero añadir a mi marca. Quiero crear más piezas atemporales que duren y no pasen de moda.

OH – Inicialmente usted quería ser arquitecto. ¿Por qué cambió de idea?

A.W. – Sigo queriendo diseñar mi propia casa o casa de campo algún día, pero me gustó la idea de trabajar en cosas pequeñas que la gente pueda interactuar con el día a día y pueda conectar emocionalmente. Y amo ser capaz de manipular el mundo a mi alrededor a través de los objetos que llenan el hogar.

OH – Usted diseña sobre todo tipo de muebles y accesorios para la casa. ¿Le gustaría trabajar en otros sectores del diseño (ej: joyería, electrodomésticos…)?

A.W. – Me encantaría abrir mi mente a otras cosas y divertirme aceptando retos usando mi experiencia y aprendiendo todo lo que pueda. Me encanta aprender cosas nuevas y mejor haciéndolo que leyendo sobre ello.

OH –  SI no hubiera sido diseñador, habría sido…

A.W. – Probablemente hubiera sido chef…Me encanta cocinar y experimentar en la cocina con los sabores, colores y estilos. No me gusta seguir recetas prefiero aprender a medida que avanzo y probar cosas nuevas constantemente. Soy un chico creativo de corazón y sentimiento, si no fuera diseñador seguiría necesitando expresarme y me encanta comer, así que tiene sentido que fuera chef.

OH – Para conocerle mejor:

1. Un color: Me encanta el rojo y creo que tiene una energía increíble y distintos estados de ánimo dependiendo el tono que elijas
2. Un material: Realmente materiales naturales en su estado en bruto. Madera sin acabado, piedra estera prima, fundidos metálicos con pátina natural, etc.
3. Un diseñador que admire: Dieter Rams, no solo me encanta la imagen de sus productos también todo su proceso de acercamiento y el proceso mental detrás de sus diseños.
4. Un mueble que le inspire: La más inspiradora para mi es la silla de Adirondack clásica. No por ser una pieza de diseño sino por su simplicidad y lo que representa. No intenta ser nada más que funcional y cómoda. Mi sitio favorito es estando sentado en una casa de campo mirando al lago, siempre que veo una me viene esa imagen a la mente. Quiero crear una pieza de mobiliario en mi vida que pueda hacer lo mismo a los demás.
5. El sitio favorito de su casa: Probablemente el salón, es mi sitio preferido para relajarme y no hacer nada o rodar por el suelo con mis hijos…es cómodo y acogedor.
6. Un lugar para vivir: Me encanta Canadá y no estoy seguro de que me gustara vivir en otro sitio, siempre me siento como en casa después de viajar y es uno de los mejores países donde vivir. Pero me encanta viajar cuando puedo y experimentar otras culturas.

Alan Wisniewski, in love with Canada, changed his mind of becoming an architect for trying out the design world. Today he is a recognized designer who has hired by Umbra and he divides his creations between sophisticated and fun. OcioHogar could talk with him and find out many details of this young designer.

OcioHogar – What made you decide to become a furniture and product designer?

Alan Wisniewski – I actually stumbled on industrial design by accident.  I originally wanted to be an architect but heard about industrial design through a teacher, after a little research my mind was made up and I knew this was for me.

OH – What needs a design to become a success?

A.W. – I think to make a design successful you need a combination of things: 1) Time and thought put into the idea, research and testing is a must.  2) Execution is crucial, a good idea executed poorly is bad…the perfect product is designed to be minimal and to be intuitive of what it does and easy to understand and made honestly.

OH – Among all your designs, which is your favourite product?

A.W. – I have done A LOT since starting with Umbra, but of them all my favourite is a mantle clock I did called Suspend Clock.  I wanted to create a classic looking bell jar clock with a time piece suspended in mid-air inside. We were able to achieve this quite effectively giving the illusion the piece is floating.

OH – Which is your source of inspiration? Where do you find those sources?

A.W. – I find my inspiration everywhere, I’m always thinking design.  Weather I’m out walking around, flipping through a magazine or surfing blogs and I see something that sparks an idea I’ll snap a photo for later.  I always find the best inspiration when I’m not looking for it, and when I see it I get excited and my mind goes nuts.

OH – How is a normal business day for you? Could you tell us more about your design process?

A.W. – I would say there is no normal business day for me, every single day is different and unique…filled with problems and obstacles to overcome.  I usually come into work, have a coffee and then decide what’s the biggest priority and touch anywhere from 5-10 different products a day at various stages…from sketching to CAD modelling to making prototypes in the shop, but I love every minute because it keeps me busy and I hate being bored.

OH – In your opinion, which is going to be the star or best-seller piece of furniture this season?

A.W. – I have seen a lot of great furniture on the market, and Umbra has not put a lot of attention in this category over the past few years, but this year we have made furniture a priority and have some great pieces on the way.  We have a new piece called Leanera that’s a great multi-functional piece that can live in the entryway, bedroom, bathroom alike.

OH – How do you see the future of furniture design?

A.W. – I see furniture becoming more multi-functional, people have some many different needs for furniture and ‘traditional furniture’ is going extinct.  The more a furniture piece can do many different things the better as it can move around the home as needed encouraging people to reuse it again and again instead of throwing it away and buying a new piece because their needs have changed.

OH – Nowadays you work with Umbra as designer. What other company would you like to work for?

A.W. – I love working for Umbra because to gives me the ability to design into so many areas within the home.  I would love a chance to design some more permanent larger scale pieces as well…its fun doing smaller stuff but I’d love the experience of designing a building or outdoor space etc.

OH – Could you explain why did you separate your designs in sophisticated or fun?

A.W. – I guess it’s just me, I have a serious side but I also have a sense of humour and have fun with my work.  I love to create clean simple modern pieces that I would call more timeless and modern but I also have fun creating more fun light hearted designs that speak to people’s emotions and can put a smile on their faces.  I like to keep them separate because I like to think I can design into both categories and have more than one side to me;)

OH – Could you tell us a little bit about your work in progress? Which are going to be your next products?

A.W. – Right now I’m working on a lot of cool new stuff, I’m trying to create more pieces that I want in my own home, stuff that I can’t find or want to add my mark on.  I want to create more timeless pieces that will last and not go out of style.

OH – Initially you were planning to be an architect . Why did you change your mind?

A.W. – I would still love to design my own house or cottage someday, but I liked the idea of working on smaller items that people interact with  on a day to day basis and can connect to emotionally and love being able to manipulate the world around me though objects that fill the home.

OH – You design mostly furniture and home accessories. Would you like to work in other design sectors (ex: jewellery, white goods…)?

A.W. – I would love to open my mind to other things and have fun taking on challenges by using my experiences to build new experiences and learn as much as I can.  I love learning new things and do so best through doing them rather than reading about them.

OH – If you weren’t designer, you would be…

A.W. – I would probably be a chef…I love to cook and experiment in the kitchen with flavours, colours and style.  I don’t like following recipes but rather learn as I go and try new things constantly.  I’m a creative guy at heart and feel even if I wasn’t a designer I would still need to express myself and I also love to eat so it makes sense I would be a chef.

OH – In depth:

1. A colour: I love red and feel it has amazing energy and so many different moods depending on the shade you choose.
2. A material: Really into natural materials right now in their raw state. Wood with no finishing, raw mat stone, cast metals with natural patina etc.
3. A designer you admire: Of course most designers would say this but Dieter Rams. I love not only the look of his products but his whole approach and thought process behind design.
4. An inspiring piece of furniture: The most inpriring piece of furniture to me is the classic adirondack chair. Not as a ‘designer piece’ but I love the simplicy of it and what it represents. It’s not trying to be anything but functional and comfortable.  My favorite place to be is sitting in one at the cottage looking over the lake, everytime I see one it brings that image.  I want to créate a piece of furniture in my lifetime that can do the same thing to others.
5. Your favourite place of your home: Probably my living room, it’s my favourite place to chill out and do nothing in or roll around on the floor with my kids…it’s just comfortable and cozy.
6. A place to live in: I love Canada and not sure I would live anywhere else, it always feels like home after travelling and feels it’s one of the greatest countries to live in. But I love to travel when I can and experience other cultures.

OcioHogar – Van a ustedes a diseñar y construir la nueva sede de Metro de Madrid en las cocheras de Canillejas. ¿Nos pueden hablar un poco más de este proyecto? ¿Cuándo está previsto el inicio de las obras?

Joaquín Torres –  Es un proyecto repleto de retos. La pretensión es un lugar idóneo de oficinas y tiene todos los requisitos para que sea un buen lugar de trabajo, funcional y dotado de modularidad. Ojalá sus trabajadores se sientan cómodos y el espacio le ayude a desarrollar de manera óptima sus labores. Estamos terminando el proyecto de ejecución y en cuanto al comienzo de las obras al ser un tema de Metro, no sabemos cuándo empezarán.

Rafael Llamazares – Es un edificio de oficinas muy razonable para su uso, con una fuerte carga escultórica y funcionabilidad. Además de procurar un alto grado de eficiencia.

OH – Actualmente tienen sede en Madrid, A Coruña, Dubái y próximamente en República Dominicana. Pero ustedes trabajan en muchas partes del mundo ¿Cuáles son los futuros destinos de Estudio A-Cero? ¿Dónde les gustaría abrir una nueva sede?

J.T. – Estamos viendo la posibilidad de abrir en Moscú, pero vamos a consolidar lo que tenemos e ir poco a poco.

R.LL. – Será en función del volumen de trabajo que surja en alguna zona del mundo. Por supuesto hay que moverse como mejor se pueda e ir a buscar trabajo donde sea. Pero hay que ir con los pies bien en el suelo y hoy en día no tiene que porqué haber una necesidad de abrir en cada país donde surge un proyecto. Tendríamos en tal caso… no sé, más de 20 oficinas en diferentes países.

OH – Recientemente han terminado una lujosa casa unifamiliar en el este de Europa ¿Podrían hablarnos de las facilidades o dificultades que puede encontrar un arquitecto cuando trabaja en otros países?

J.T. – No solemos tener ningún problema. Además el cliente es el que suele facilitar bastante las cosas y generalmente nos propone a profesionales locales. La verdad es que hasta el momento la colaboración con otros arquitectos extranjeros ha sido inmejorable.

R.LL. – En pleno S.XXI tenemos una capacidad de inmediatez en las comunicaciones, que unido al deseo del cliente de realizar su diseño con nosotros, además de nuestra experiencia en proyectos internacionales… resulta casi tan natural actualmente en A-cero realizar un proyecto para Moscú que para Ourense. Obviamente hay salvedades… ciertas peculiaridades socioculturales, climáticas… diferentes hitos a tener en cuenta, pero como en cada proyecto, sea donde sea.

OH – Estudio A-Cero tiene una cartera de clientes muy importante. ¿Existe alguna empresa con la que no trabajen y que les hiciera especial ilusión llegar a trabajar?

J.T. – ¡Uff! Pues hay cientos de empresas que me parecen más apasionantes con las que no hayamos trabajado, pero me quedo con las que hemos trabajado y con las que nos quedan por trabajar.

R.LL. – Yo diría que cualquier empresa para la que no hayamos trabajado, que lógicamente hay casi infinitas, estaría feliz por poder trabajar para ella.

OH – Actualmente cuentan con más de sesenta trabajadores ¿Podría considerarse a Estudio A-Cero como uno de los más importantes y representativos de España? ¿Qué perspectiva de crecimiento tienen?

J.T. – Creo que en España hay magníficos profesionales, y estar bien posicionados en el mercado es ya todo un triunfo. Quiero seguir creciendo y mejorando en todos los aspectos de nuestras vidas y sin duda en lo profesional también.

R.LL. – Nos gusta mucho el tipo de estudio que tenemos, y por supuesto nos gustaría seguir creciendo y todo indica que seguiremos creciendo, pero sin duda lo más importante es hacer bien nuestro trabajo.

OH – En OcioHogar tenemos varios de sus productos, pero uno de los que más llama la atención de nuestros clientes, que es el más vendido, es el conjunto Rest de mesa y sillas para exterior. ¿Podrían contarnos un poco más sobre este producto? ¿Dónde surge la idea? ¿Por qué la inspiración en el Origami?

J.T. – Teníamos que diseñar una colección en muebles para exterior y hacer algo estable, estético y funcional y en el Origami hay toda una filosofía y una poesía tremendamente sugerente que nos inspiró y emocionó… Como punto de partida.

R.LL. – La verdad que es una maravilla poder realizar diseños para una firma como Vondom. Es tremendamente admirable, esta empresa española que apuesta por el diseño, sobre todo por el diseño español. Ya hemos realizado varias colecciones para su mobiliario de exterior (o de interior), y en concreto la colección Rest sí que posee cierta reminiscencia con el Origami japonés.

A-CERO is one of the best known architectural and design firms in Spain and in almost everywhere. Joaquin Torres and Rafael Llamazares are the creators and partners of this firm that addressed projects for personalities and government. OcioHogar has had the pleasure of speaking with the two architects to meet the present and future of Estudio A-cero.

OcioHogar – You have been chosen to design and build the new headquarters of Metro de Madrid in Canillejas’ hub. Could you tell us a bit more about this project? When is it scheduled to start works?

Joaquin Torres – It is a project full of challenges. The objective is to build an ideal place of offices and it has all the requirements to be a good workplace, functional and equipped with modularity. Hopefully their employees would feel comfortable and the space will help them to develop optimally their work. We are finishing the project implementation but the official launch will be decided by Metro, we do not know when it will start.

Rafael Llamazares – It is a very reasonable project, with a strong sculptural background and functionality. In addition to ensuring a high degree of efficiency.

OH – Nowadays Estudio A-cero has headquarters in Madrid, A Coruña, Dubai and soon in Dominican Republic. But you work in many parts of the world. What are the future locations of Estudio A-cero? Where would you like to open a new office?

J.T. – We are seeing the possibility of opening in Moscow, but we will consolidate what we have and go slowly.

R.LL. – It will be depending on the workload arising around the world. Of course you have to move there where you get projects. But we must be sure of next steps, it doesn’t make sense  to open an office in each country where a project arises. We would have in this case … I do not know, more than 20 offices in different countries.

OH – Recently you have completed a luxurious family house in the east of Europe.  Could you tell us about the facilities or difficulties an architect may face working in other countries?

J.T. – We do not usually have any problems. Furthermore the customer is who usually makes things easier and generally proposes local professionals. The truth is, until now, the cooperation with other foreign architects has been excellent.

R.LL. – In the XXI century we have the capacity of immediacy in communications, which together with the customer’s desire to make their design with us, plus our experience in international projects … is now almost as easy in A-cero to develop a project for Moscow as it is for Ourense. Obviously there are exceptions … some cultural peculiarities, weather … but you will find roadblocks in any project, wherever it is.

OH – Estudio A-cero has a very important portfolio of clients. Is there any company that you do not work with currently and you are specially interested in working with?

J.T. – Uff! There are hundreds of companies that seem very exciting and we have not worked with, but I’ll stick with the ones we have worked with.

R.LL. – I would say that any company that we have not worked with yet, logically there are almost infinite companies, I would be happy to be working for them.

OH – Currently Estudio A-cero has more than seventy workers. Could you be considered as one of the most important and representative Estudios of Spain? What expectations of growth do you have?

J.T. – I think there are excellent professionals in Spain, and we have achieved a good position in the market. I want to continue growing and improving in all aspects of our lives and certainly professionally too.

R.LL. – We really like the kind of study that we have and of course we would like to continue growing and it appears that will continue to grow. But certainly the most important thing is to do our job well.

OH – In OcioHogar we sell several of your products but, one that attracts the attention of our customers, which is the best seller, is the Rest set of table and chairs for outdoors. Could you give us some insight about this product? Where did the idea arised? Why did you inspire in the Origami?

J.T. – We had to design a furniture collection for outdoor and do something stable, aesthetic and functional and the Origami has a whole philosophy and a tremendously evocative poetry that touched and inspired us … As a starting point.

R.LL. – Actually it’s great to make designs for a firm like Vondom. It is tremendously admirable, a Spanish company committed to design, and specially Spanish design. We have already made several furniture collections for outdoors (or indors), and in particular the Rest collection that has some reminiscence with Japanese Origami.

OcioHogar- El hecho de ser hijo de Juan Torres Piñón, un afamado empresario relacionado con el mundo de la construcción. ¿Pudo ser uno de los motivos que le llevaron a interesarse por la arquitectura?

Joaquín Torres – Mi padre ha estado metido en el mundo de la empresa desde que tengo uso de razón pero su labor era más de gestión y más como ingeniero, nunca desde un punto de vista creativo… Es más, creo que a él le hubiera gustado que hubiese cursado ingeniería de caminos. Pero yo por vocación pero también por reafirmación, pues desde muy joven decidí que quería ser arquitecto, tenía muy claro que no quería trabajar para mi padre y sus empresas. Jamás he realizado un proyecto para ACS, ni para ninguna de las empresas de mi padre.

OH- En su opinión ¿qué es lo que hace que un diseño tenga éxito?

J.T – El éxito es algo relativo. Para mí el éxito de un diseño radica en transmitir a mi cliente mi seguridad y mi “pasión” por ese diseño y que el cliente quede complacido.

OH- En el estudio A-Cero realizan arquitectura de edificios y también diseño de interiores ¿son dos facetas que van unidas o se deben separar?

J.T – Yo creo que la arquitectura no termina en las fachadas de un edificio. El diseño es global y nadie mejor que el creador del espacio para completar el diseño. Pero evidentemente se puede separar aunque considero que va en contra del proyecto global.

OH – Actualmente se encuentra algo más retirado de la exposición en los medios. ¿Cómo es un día de trabajo para usted?

J.T – Decidí hace algo más de un año dejar la televisión y centrar la comunicación del estudio en medios más especializados.

Me imagino que una jornada laboral mía es como la de cualquier persona que tiene que levantar una empresa con tantos empleados. Es intensa y muy larga y llena de complicaciones que hay que resolver: diseños, control de proyectos, control de obras, presupuestos, gestión de personal… En fin, multitud de aspectos que nunca tienen un final.

OH- En 2013 publicó su libro “Detrás de la puerta” ¿cómo fue la experiencia de escribir un libro? ¿Cree que volverá a publicar en el futuro?

J.T – Es un libro que relata anécdotas de cómo fueron los primeros 15 años de profesión. He tenido más propuestas y las he declinado todas pues si volviese a escribir otro libro me implicaría mucho más y para eso hace falta mucho tiempo y es justo de lo que yo carezco.

OH- ¿En qué o en quién se inspira para realizar sus creaciones?

J.T – El mundo del arte es sin duda una magnífica referencia y una fuente de inspiración. Pero al final uno se va nutriendo de todo aquello que le sorprende, que le emociona… Una exposición, una escenografía, un interiorismo, una película… la vida.

OH- Su relación laboral con Rafael Llamazares se extiende ya 19 años, trabajando codo a codo ¿qué tal es la relación a día de hoy? ¿En qué aspectos se complementan el uno al otro?

J.T – Rafa es mi socio, mi amigo… Es una persona que siempre está para todo… Y nuestra relación es permanente y perfectamente complementaria. Es sin duda de esas personas que siempre suman. Soy muy afortunado contando con una persona con su talento y su talante… Y no sé cómo le complementaré yo a él, lo que sí que puedo decir es que él no solo me complementa, también me hace ser mejor arquitecto y lo que es más importante, mejor persona.

OH- Usted es una persona muy polifacética, le hemos visto en medios de comunicación, ha escrito un libro, es arquitecto y diseñador de interiores, amante del deporte… ¿En qué otros sectores le gustaría trabajar?

J.T – Me gusta mucho pintar y seguro que es una faceta que acabaré desarrollando más intensivamente.

OH- Estudio A-Cero y usted son muy conocidos por el diseño de casas de múltiples personajes famosos ¿Hay alguna de estas casas que suponga un hito especial en su carrera?

J.T – Pues la verdad, hay una estupenda vivienda que proyectamos que aparte de tener su  peculiaridad dentro de la arquitectura de A-cero, posee un gran peso afectivo. La casa de Fernando Hierro. Yo creo que fue una de las primeras personas conocidas a la que le realicé un proyecto y resultó además ser una excelente persona, aún a día de hoy unos 15 años después es un gran amigo.

OH- Si usted no fuera arquitecto, habría sido…

J.T – Habría sido cualquier cosa pero anhelando ser arquitecto. La arquitectura es junto a mis hijos el eje unilateral de mi vida y todo tiene sentido por y para la arquitectura en mi vida.

OH- Para terminar:

OcioHogar had the pleasure of interviewing one of the most well-known architects in Spain. Called the “architect of the famous”, Joaquin Torres is co-founder of Estudio A-cero with Rafael Llamazares. A high-profile architect who has managed to bring the design closer to people and promote the great work of their brand. Which it is one of the most famous in Spain and abroad.

OH- Being the son of Juan Torres Piñón, a famous construction entrepreneur. Could it be one of the reasons that led you to become interested in architecture?

J.T – My father has been involved in the world of business as long as I can remember but his job was management and as engineer, never from a creative point of view… Moreover, I think he would have liked me to study road engineering. However I was loyal to my vocation, since a very early age I decided I would be an architect and I was very clear that I didn’t want to work for my father or his companies. I’ve never done a project for ACS, nor for any of the companies of my father.

OH- In your opinion, what makes a design to become a success?

J.T – Success is relative. For me the success of a design is about transmitting my safety and my «passion» for that design to the customer, and to please the customer.

OH- In Estudio A-cero you work on architecture for buildings and interior design. Are they tightly coupled areas of design or should be separated?

J.T – I think that architecture does not end on the facades of a building. The design is global and nobody better than the creator of a space to complete the design. Obviously you can separate it although I think it goes against the overall project.

OH- Nowadays you have reduced your exposure to the media. How is a working day for you?

J.T – I decided one year ago to leave television and center the Estudio’s communication in more specialized media.

My working day is like the one of any person who has to drive a company with many employees. It is intense and full of complications to be solved: design, project control, building control, budgeting, employee’s management … In brief, lot of work that never has an end.

OH- In 2013 you published your book «Behind the door». How was the experience of writing a book? Do you think you will publish again in the future?

J.T – It is a book about stories I had during the first 15 years of profession. I’ve had more proposals and I have declined all of them because if I was to write another book, I would get very involved and I don’t have much time.

OH- What or who inspires you to make your creations?

J.T – The world of art is certainly a great reference and a source of inspiration. But at the end we are nourished by everything that surprises you, excites you … An exhibition, an interior design, a film … life.

OH- Your working relationship with Rafael Llamazares extends over 19 years working closely. How is the relationship today? How do you complement each other?

J.T – Rafa is my partner, my friend … he is a person who is always available … And our relationship is permanent and perfectly complementary. He is certainly of that person who always adds up. I am very fortunate having someone with his talent and spirit … I do not know how I complement him, what I can say is that he does not only complements me, he also makes me a better architect and what is most important, a better person.

OH- You are a very versatile person, we have seen you in the media, you have written a book, as an architect and interior designer, sports fan… In which other sectors would like to work?

J.T – I love painting and I’m sure it is a facet that I will focus on at some point. No doubt.

OH- Estudio A-cero and you are well known for the design of many houses of famous people. Do any of these houses represent a particular milestone in your career?

J.T – To be fair, there is a great housing project that apart from being a peculiarity into the architecture of A-cero, has a great emotional weight. Fernando Hierro’s house. I think he was one of the first famous people that I worked for. And he also proved to be an excellent person, even today, around 15 years later; he is still a great friend.

OH- If you were not an architect, you would have been…

J.T – I would have been anything but looking forward to being an architect. Architecture is, together with my children, the unilateral focus of my life. My life only makes sense as an architect.

OH– To finish:
