In this first chapter we are glad to introuce you Luigi Trenti, designer of Mosaico and Fifty by Cattelan Italia. With this interview, you can know him better and enjoy his passion for design.
Luigi Trenti studied Architecture and Industrial Design at Florence University. He has worked as a designer in different fields where he has succeeded with original products that have created their own style. Nowadays, he combine his work as a designer with a job as a professor at ISIA and LABA in Florence and as director of MuDeTo (Toscan Museum of Design).

OcioHogar (OH): What made you decide to become a furniture and product designer?

Luigi Trenti (LT): A little because I have always loved drawing and design and a little because in the ’80s in Italy there were few schools of design and the best were in Florence, the city where emerged many famous Italian designers like De Lucchi, Morozzi, Branzi, Thun, Iosa Ghini, Giovannoni and so on.
For this reason, despite being an architect, I’ve got a degree thesis in industrial design and then I worked mainly in the world of products.
Furthermore, working in the world of furnishing is almost a duty in Italy, as it is one of the productive fields, with fashion, that is more appreciated abroad.
In fact, the «Salone del Mobile» in Milan is currently the most important fair we have.
Almost every Italian designer is involved in the world of furniture, while are really less the designers who are involved in other fields.

OH: What needs a design to become a success?

LT: I think we need a combination of factors: Originality, Glamour, Accessibility, Functionality and now is strictly required a very good Communication.
Originality allows the product to stand out among many similar on the market.
The Glamour which the product communicates, conquers the potential customer who must perceive, however, its Accessibility about the price and its Functionality about its features.
But the market is now saturated with a lot of valid and interesting proposals and only a good Communication allows a better product to emerge between the others.
If these five elements are all present is very likely that your product will be successful.

OH: Among all your designs, which is your favourite product?

LT: Some would say the famous words: my next product!
It is not easy to answer to this question because I have worked in various production fields, too far apart, but remaining in the world of furnishing, first of all there is the Lesena lamp, which still inspires new products in various fields, then the double-joint kitchen tap Poker, the shelf-drawer Di Giorno/Di Notte and the adaptable height walk-in closet Lift.
These products became trendsetter on their markets.
Finally I would like to suggest you Server, a fantastic glass desk, with which I realized with a high level company like Tonelli Design, a concept I had in my mind for years.
Unfortunately it is not always easy to find companies interested in experimenting, while are too many those that imitate the others.
I can only say that I still have many ideas waiting the right production partner.

OH: Which is your source of inspiration? Where do you find those sources?

LT: Everything can be source of inspiration if you are curious: art and technology, music and movies, the observation of nature and people. Big source of inspiration are also digital tools.
I’ve always had a good feeling with computer with which I started working in 1990.
I love internet and I was among the first Italian designers to have a website and a profile on Linkedin and Facebook.
I admire the inventors of browsers and social networks which are for me successfully design projects with zero impact and incredible global involvement.
Internet, if well managed, can give us more true communication of the facts.

OH: How is a normal business day for you?

LT: Currently, in addition to the activity of architect and designer with Italian and foreign clients, I’m teaching in two universitary schools (ISIA and LABA) and last but not least, I’m the president of the online tuscan design museum – called MuDeTo – a project I conceived and founded which I care very much.

OH: In your opinion, which is going to be the star or best-seller piece of furniture this season?

LT: I hope that it becomes «one case» a bed that I will present during the next Salone del Mobile.
It is a self-production and trasgressive project that I can not reveal!

OH: How do you see the future of furniture design?

LT: In general I think the market will be increasingly divided between a production of low-end price produced with quality and compelling design solutions, and a production of superior craftsmanship and design tailored, very expensive and destined to users without economic problems.

OH: With which company would you like to work for?

LT: In the furnishing field I have always worked with Italian companies, apart Colombini who was anyway based in San Marino!
So I’d like to work with some foreign companies, and why not, some from Spain like Vibia or Vondom.

OH: You won Compasso d’Oro in 1998 for Mondial. How has this award affected your career?

LT: Actually the award was then given to the company Targetti Sankey for which I had worked as in-house chief of design.
It was a great satisfaction that rewarded the good teamwork which was done both for the Mondial and the next F1 System projects, but to be honest, I remember with more pleasure the awards I won later as freelance designer.
All the awards gave me security and confirmed that the professional choice I had done was right.
Today, however, I’m not so much interested in awards: there are too many, too much expensive and often are assigned to products that have yet to prove a real success.

OH: You are well known for the Lesena Style, are you aware of the influence it has had in lot of pieces along this 17 years?

LT: Lesena lamp was inspired in 1994 by Michelangelo Buonarroti’s florentine architecture details and has been produced since 1998.
Its Lesena Style concept has had and continues to have a lot of influence on the furnishing market because it is a very simple and smart design concept which can easily decorate, enrich and improve walls.
This concept has changed the image of many objects that previously had a different design: for example, think about mirrors that were short and wide before and now are often long and narrow. You can see many lamps and home accessories which have been produced with a similar design. Finally, in the bathroom environment Lesena Style led a general revolution: radiators that were thick structures of tubes have become thin wall panels, as well as shower columns and basins corners. 17 years of trendsetting in furnishing and seems not to stop!

OH: We sell your design “Fifty” by Cattelan Italia, can you tell us a bit more about the design process of this bookcase?

LT: After the success of the lamp Lesena I decided to make a “trilogy of Lesena Style”and six years later, in 2004, I met the producer Ciatti and realized the TV stand Wall.
It allows to position the screen at various heights and contains various peripherals hiding all the connections and cables with a panel that could be painted as the wall, making it almost mimetic.
Further six years later, in 2010 I met Cattelan Italia and finally I completed the trilogy with Fifty, which is inspired by the design of insulating coatings of anechoic rooms.
On each panel 50% of the shelves are horizontal and 50% vertical. Moreover, in each composition wall panels are mounted alternating 50% and 50% rotated of 180°.
For these two reasons the product had to be called Fifty-Fifty, but then the producer for simplicity has renamed it Fifty.

OH: You have worked for several car companies such as BMW, Bugatti, Fiat or Maserati, what do you like most, cars or furniture/lighting?

LT: I really like both; I designed expensive accessories for car companies and watch manufacturers and at the same time cheap furnishings for big department stores, I like to wander from one sector to another, I like to test myself.
I think the designer is a figure similar to that of the actor and a good actor should be able to interpret more roles, dramatic, brilliant, comic …

In depth:

a. If you weren’t designer, you would be… a movies director.

b. A colour : blue

c. A material : titanium

d. A designer you admire : James Dyson

e. An inspiring piece of furniture : the Fletcher Capstan Table

f. Your favourite place of your home : living room

g. A place to live in : a treehouse in a forest

Hoy comenzamos una ronda de entrevistas a algunos de nuestros diseñadores más reconocidos.
