He graduated in Milan and began to work with great masters of this area. But then, a crisis in this sector affected him, so Carlo began to design furniture and items for houses. Carlo Bartoli can be proud to have some of his designs in important museums all over the world such as MOMA in New York, Pompidou Centre in Paris or Victoria&Albert Museum in London.

OcioHogar (OH): What made you decide to become furniture and product designers?

Bartoli Desig (BD): As an architect, Carlo started to design items for his own home; then a crisis in the building industry pushed him more in that branch he had started by chance. We (Anna and Paolo) joined him when the design activity was already established.

OH: In your opinion, what needs a design to become a success?

BD: A successful design is something that betters life and contains a little “quid” more, something unexpected which lightens up our intelligence and sense of wonder; in a sense it makes people recognize that design as a worthwhile novelty in our everyday story.

OH: Among all your designs, which is your favourite product?

BD: The first one, the Gaia armchair, and the latest, the 1085 Edition chair for Kristalia.

OH: Which is your source of inspiration? Where do you find those sources?
BD: Inspirations come from many sources: nature – we wish our products should produce the positive feeling of being related to nature – art, technology, traditions which we reinterpret, travels. All stimulus ensued from personal experiences accumulate in layers and they are not focused, up to that moment when your pick them out of the “brain library”; usually they are already distilled because they rested there and maybe they are also mixed. Then we might want to deepen with researches that quintessence of something that our brain retained as important.

OH: How is a normal business day in Bartoli Design?

BD: Let’s say it is 40% dedicated to design, research and concepts, and 60% to contacts, organization and engineering, an activity which is more and more energetic! Our clients are relatively small companies; they need constant attention in order to develop our designs.

OH: In your opinion, which is going to be the star or best-seller piece of furniture this season?

BD: We really don’t know! The Salone del Mobile is just finished, there are hundreds of new pieces and much more recent ones which the market has not acknowledged yet. Moreover each country has different attitudes so the same product behaves differently around the world.

OH: How do you see the future of furniture design?

BD: We see two worlds apart. Gallery-like or special designs, produced or auto produced in small scale, with a conceptual or material research behind them, and large scale production, which is going to be largely transferred to the emerging markets both for production and consumption. In between few brands and products (with medium scale production), which used to be the core of what we have known as “design” in the last forty years: they are and will be working hard to retain their identity and marked share – while some of them already shifted to fulfil the desires of the emerging rich markets which demanded accommodations to their tastes.

OH: You have worked with important companies such as Bonaldo, Kartell, Jesse or Arketipo. With which company would you like to work for?
BD: We’d like to increase the number of our clients abroad: we worked for several foreign brands, in Spain, Japan, Indonesia, the USA, China… It is so interesting to see how differently each one perceives design and what we can do for them. Japan is particularly interesting to us, because of its culture. And China is discovering a new pride in offering its own, original design products. It’s good to be part of that.

OH: You have won three of the most important awards of design: Compasso d’Oro, Red Dot Award and Good Design Award. How have these awards affected your studio?

BD: Most of all, they are personal satisfactions. They also increased our credibility as designers; that is a complex issue where many aspects have to merge, but, yes, the awards play their part.

OH: Can you tell us more about your work in progress? In which kind of furniture are you working?

BD: As usual we will be working at products for the public and domestic environments: systems of seatings and tables, a collection of furniture with hide, solid wood furniture, a new kitchen, rugs, lights and the re-editions of some icons of our past.

OH: We sell your design “Octa” by Bonaldo; can you tell us a bit more about the design process of this table?

BD: We started from the concept of the Shaghai game, with the sticks randomly arranged and intersecting. We liked the idea but we had to put a geometrical order in it. The design process went through several trials to get a stable framework for the base; we worked with mock-ups, sketches and 3Ds made by us and real scale models made by Bonaldo. Several numbers, positions, angles, bendings and weldings of the rods… around ten different solutions and prototypes were made to get to the final range which is offered now.

You can see all his design available to buy in our online shop: ociohogar.com

OH: You work in the area of furniture and architecture. If you could begin to work in a different field, in which area would you like to work, for example, jewellery, cars, white goods, etc?
BD: Food. We are all passionate about it.

OH: If you weren’t designers, you would be…

BD: We are three, each one with a different attitude.
