Their careers met, and in 2012 they created their studio in Milan. In their careers, the have worked for important companies from Japan and Italu like Bonaldo or Brother.

OcioHogar (OH): What made you decide to become a furniture and product designer?

Shiina+Nardi (SN): We both had a different motivation but complementary: After visiting an exhibition of Isamu Noguchi at the Sogetsu Kaikan in Tokyo, Kaori was attracted by the opportunity to give quality to a space through objects that complete it. Riccardo was as a child attracted by Airplanes and Tools, with their functionality and aesthetics, had a natural predisposition toward this work, which he did as a part of himself.

OH: What needs a design to become a success?

SN: Many times it happens to have insights too ahead of its time, which are not implemented by industry and marketing. The success of a product depends on the synchrony with the common feeling of the moment combined with a pinch of pioneering. Then, being Industrial Design and not Art, the rest depends on the production system, the smartness and the media who then sells it.

OH: Among all your designs, which is your favorite product?

SN: Between old and new products: the chair Tutumu by Bonaldo, the bench Reverse by Fonderie Viterbesi, the pitcher Kotori and lamp Kurage for Hands on Design, and of course the lamp Teca for Slow Wood.

OH: Which is your source of inspiration? Where do you find Those sources?

SN: As a couple we have an Eastern-Western cultural vision sometimes different, but a trait we certainly have in common, is the love and admiration for Nature, as inspiration and synthesis of aesthetic and emotional balance.

OH: How is a normal business day for you?

SN: We are fortunate to live in a large attic light next to the Castello Sforzesco and Parco Sempione in Milano. Our study is complementary to the house and this allows us to vary the work times at will. We work surely a lot but if possible in a fairly flexible and free time, and so our employees.

OH: In your opinion, which is going to be the star or best-selling piece of furniture this season?

SN: As for us, we hope our lamp Kurage for Hands on Design, true example of evocative Nature as explained above.

OH: How do you see the future of furniture design?

SN: From some years, in sync with an increasingly broad common feeling, we are working to get back to the basics of design, through the collaboration with firms with an high quality craftsmanship.

In a so exasperated globalization, where the market is worldwide, but requires financial means and gigantic structures to be addressed, our idea is humble and ambitious, condensed into a few basic points.

– Re-evaluate the quality of craftsmanship and equalize the collaboration designer-craftsman.

– Create objects, not luxurious but provoking emotions, unsophisticated from appearance or aesthetic and functional extremism, and built in pure and environmentally friendly materials.

– Experience of our work without only seeking success for its own sake, and not just look for the big business.

We think so, given the great turmoil in this general sense, simply to be on a road and a direction that many already run through a different future. The Design and the World need now humility and pragmatism, and to be biocompatible and gentle in his being and in his actions.

OH: With Which company would you like to work for?

SN: For a designer today, working with Companies is increasingly difficult. We do not want to get into dangerous arguments, but most of them are culturally backward and tied to economic rules that will soon be obsolete. The role of the designer is humiliated, poorly paid, and essentially not understood. In the absence of laws, moral and rules, universally respected by the companies, is due to become company ourselves. But with the principles and the humility that we talked about.

OH: You come from Japan, Which are the differences between European and Japanese furnishing?

SN: To outline, in Japan is designing based on aesthetics over function, also traditional, but oft technically advanced.
Europe is designing an original idea, synthesizing form and function, alternately giving priority.

OH: Your study, Shiina + Nardi has reached a big success with the lamp Teca, winner of an A’Design Award. What means this for you?

SN: It means perhaps we are on the right track, that a gentle approach without robbery among all actors, and the pureness of the materials involved, creates timeless and harmonic objects.

OH: You design mostly furniture, what kind of different products would you like to work with, for example, jewellery, cars, white goods, etc?

SN: Kaori loves objects like tableware and small furnishings.
Riccardo comes from the automotive, he has designed also phones, street furniture and lots of lamps. Lighting is still his favourite field, but he aims to design also on Work Tools.

OH: If you were not a designer, you would be…

SN: Kaori: Writer without success…
Riccardo: Forest ranger, happy…

In depth:

a.
