He is Alain Gilles, a Belgian creative who changed his professional career from the world of Finance to his true passion: the design. Along his career, he has won several awards like “Designer of the Year 2012” by the Interieur Kortrijk Fair.

OcioHogar (OH): You studied Political Science and Marketing. Later, you graduated in Industrial Design. Why did you become a furniture designer?

Alain Gilles (AG): Yes indeed, I didn’t come straight to design, it took me a few years that this is something I could do as a real job! I also worked 5 years in International Finance at J.P. Morgan which was actually quite the opposite of what attracted me in life! Having restudied Industrial Design and more specifically product design I could have just work for a big company like Philips, but I wanted to work on my own designs and logics. When I started my own Studio, it seemed easier for me to design furniture since I could just propose things to editors; I didn’t have to wait for a brief or a client. I could just experiment and propose my design to well know furniture brands since that is more or less the way they work.

OH: In your opinion, what make a design to be a success?

AG: It is always difficult to know what makes a design successful; basically it has to speak to people. When designing I try to design pieces that tell several stories at the same time. Pieces that have different levels of understanding. But also pieces that are warm and welcoming. You never know what will become a best seller, it just happens, the best you can do is to try to design good products that tell real stories. For instance, if you look at the Big Table I designed for Bonaldo, it was designed to be different, not to be a best seller. Bonaldo never expected it to become the huge best seller that it has become, but it become almost an instant classic! I believe they saw it as a piece that was striking and that would get the attention of the press at best.

OH: Which is your favourite product among all your designs?

AG: This is a question that is almost impossible to answer…. It is just like if I would ask you which of your children your favourite one is! So then, I would just put forward a few products that show well the full scope of my vision, of how I approached a project.
The Big Table ( Bonaldo ), the Rock Garden planters collection (Qui est Paul ?), the BuzziHood phone box for mobile phones (Buzzipsace), the Nomad solar lamp (O’Sun), the Container sideboard (Casamania), the Tracks extendable table (Bonaldo), The Pure foosball table (Debuchy by Toulet), the X-Ray sofa (La Chance)…

OH: Which is your source of inspiration and where do you find it?

AG: My inspirations are usually architectural when I play on the structure of an object, graphic when I experiment with colours and materials, people when I think about new ways to live with a product and relate to them, or new typologies of product, new functionalities.

OH: How is a normal business day for you?

AG: I have a pretty normal life! I wake up early since I have two kids that have to go to school, usually when I will always check my mails before breakfast. Once all the family is out of the house, I have a bit of time for myself to check the news, I like to know what is happening in general around the world ( probably due to my political sciences background ). At around 9am I will go down to the Studio. Since I am a pretty bad drawer, I work a lot on the computer. I draw and sculpt the products in 3D right on the computer. Of course, I am not every day in the studio since I also have to go and see the prototypes in the factories in various countries. At 6pm, when the family is back home I do the cooking while my wife takes care of the homework. Usually when the kids are asleep I will go back down to the studio to work on the projects. I like that quieter time in the evening, you can focus more easily.

OH: In your opinion, which is going to be the best-seller piece of furniture this season?

AG: If only I knew I would have designed it ! LOL !

OH: What do you think about the future of furniture design?

AG: I believe that people when they can will be looking for more and more personal pieces in order to define themselves. I have also always believed in buying more expensive pieces that last longer. Signature pieces generally also better keep their value and can be sold back to someone else rather than thrown away.

OH: You have worked for important companies like Qui est Paul or Bonaldo. With which other company would you like to work for?

AG: There are plenty of very good brands that I would very happy to design for, especially the ones that would enable me to play with other material, technics or logics.

OH: You have won several design awards such as “Red Dot Best of the Best” for the Welded table and the Good Design award for the Big Table. What have they meant for you?

AG: Yes, indeed, we have been very lucky with awards! I am always happy to get an award, but then again I don’t really care that much about them. I don’t design for awards, I design for people, but also to express myself and turn my dreams into reality.

I know that some people and in some countries like the states very much appreciate products that have been awarded. So it is a good marketing tool but it is not something that drives me!

OH: Could you tell us in which kind of products are you working on? Which are going to be your next products?

AG: We are working on a lot of new products. At the beginning of June we just had our new X-Ray sofa launched for the very trendy French brand “La chance”. It is our first collaboration with them and we are all very happy with the end result.

Right now we are working on a very large collection of outdoor furniture and architectural elements that will normally be released in the course of 2016.

We are also working on several new piece for a new high end Belgian brand that will be marketed in an unconventional and innovative way.

And of course new pieces for companies like Bonaldo with whom we have bene collaboration almost since the launch of the studio some 7 years ago. We also always initiate new projects that we then propose to international editors/producers.

OH: We sell your table Big Table for Bonaldo. Could you tell us about its design process or where did you get the inspiration?

AG: The whole idea behind the Big Table was to make something that looked impossible, but also something non-static that could have different personalities.

Normally a large rectangular table is not supported only at the centre, almost has if it was resting on a point. I had the Tulip table from Eero Saarinen in mind, they don’t have much in common, and the Saarinen table is round, but I liked the fact that it like it was floating.

The particularity of the Big Table is also that it looks like it is in movement. Most furniture pieces are visually fairly static; I like to design pieces that are dynamic. As you go around the table and change perspective it always looks different, liked if it had different personalities.

Then you have the different colours for each of the four legs. That feature came a bit by accident. I wanted to design a table with 4 legs that were different, since I was getting lost in my 3D program; I associated different colours to each of them…. Eventually, it seemed to make sense with the concept of a table with 4 different legs, so it stayed. Visually it probably one of the most instantly recognisable element of the table when in the multicolour version.

Last year Bonaldo also introduced a Corten steel version for the 5 year anniversary of the table. Corten steel is a special metal that protects itself by rusting, it is a material more commonly used in architecture, but I thought it made look even more like a timeless object, an object and a design made to last.

OH: You design mostly furniture. In which other sector would you like to work (ej: jewellery, cars…)?

AG: Well actually, we also design more and more small products. Like the Nomad solar lamp for O’SUN. We also designed a full range of kitchen tools for a new French brand, but its launch took a bit more time than expected.
I like to venture into new fields where we haven’t worked yet. That was very much the case with the foosball table “The Pure” with designed for the French brand “Debuchy by Toulet” and which is just an incredible piece.

OH: If you weren’t designer, you would be…

AG: Maybe I would still be working in International Finance…. Or stuck in a job that is not really my life!

In depth:

a. A colour: all the colours…

b. A material: a combination of different materials…

c. A designer you admire: the late Oscar Niemeyer

d. An inspiring piece of furniture: no clue, not generally inspired by furniture…

e. Your favourite place of your home: my Studio!

f. A place to live in: a modernist house like in the old James Bond movies…

Hoy tenemos el placer de traeros la entrevista a uno de los diseñadores más prometedores y exitosos del momento.
